The Cosmological Argument: How Does the Universe Point to God? by Gopakumar Rajan

Another common argument for God's existence is the cosmological argument, which aims to explain why there is something rather than nothing, and why the universe seems to have a beginning and a cause. The basic structure of this argument is as follows:

1. Everything that exists must have a cause or explanation for its existence.

2. The universe exists.

3. Therefore, the universe must have a cause or explanation for its existence, which we call God.

This argument appeals to the human intuition that everything we observe in the world has a cause, and that the universe as a whole must have a cause as well. However, this argument faces several objections, such as the infinite regress problem (i.e., what caused God's existence?) or the possibility of alternative explanations (e.g., natural forces, multiverse theory, etc.). Moreover, some physicists and cosmologists have challenged the assumption that the universe actually had a beginning, or that it needs a cause if it operates according to physical laws. Therefore, the cosmological argument remains a contested and complex issue in the interface between science and religion.
